Journalists and black community leaders advertised emigration\u003cbr\u003e\nto Haiti as a way for African Americans to resist discrimination and show the\u003cbr\u003e\nworld that the black race could be an equal on the world stage, while\u003cbr\u003e\nantislavery whites sought to support a nation founded by liberated slaves.\u003cbr\u003e\nBlack and white businessmen were excited by trade potential, and racist whites\u003cbr\u003e\nviewed Haiti has a way to export the race problem that plagued America.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nBy the end of the decade, black Americans migration to Haiti began to ebb as\u003cbr\u003e\nemigrants realized that the Caribbean republic wasn’t the black Eden they’d\u003cbr\u003e\nanticipated. Caribbean Crossing\u003cbr\u003e\ndocuments the rise and fall of the campaign for black emigration to Haiti,\u003cbr\u003e\ndrawing on a variety of archival sources to share the rich voices of the\u003cbr\u003e\nemigrants themselves.
