Part 1 examines this desire as both a literal and socio-political phenomenon through readings of Marie de France’s \u003ci\u003eLais\u003c\/i\u003e, Chrétien de Troyes’ \u003ci\u003eCligès\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003ePerceval\u003c\/i\u003e, and Chaucer’s \u003ci\u003eCanterbury Tales\u003c\/i\u003e, texts variously expressing social, economic, and political culture in romance. In part 2, Heyworth is concerned with missing or absent bodies in Petrarch’s \u003ci\u003eRime sparse\u003c\/i\u003e, Shakespeare’s \u003ci\u003eRomeo and Juliet,\u003c\/i\u003e and Milton’s \u003ci\u003eParadise Lost \u003c\/i\u003eand the generic rupture they cause in lyric, tragedy, and epic.
